I believed Jessie Woo from the start, but I still have to blame her because I saw this coming. I couldn't help but ask myself why she was even bothering with this community when she was already doing okay for herself. Knowing how my people can be, often expecting things for free, the whole situation was predictably unprofessional.
A PATTERN OF UNPROFESSIONALISM
The fact that she had to do her own makeup is ridiculous, and frankly, it's just embarrassing. Organizers wouldn't dare do the same thing if it were someone as big as Beyoncé (not that they can afford her anyway) or other mainstream artists. They simply are not ready for that level, and this is why major U.S. artists don't bother wasting their time and energy on them. They're always reaching for big names but are never prepared.
Look at what they did to Spice a few years ago. They were supposed to have her perform, but it turned out they didn't have enough money to pay her fee, which was only about $20,000, a decent price. They didn't even book her flight, so she ended up not coming. Artists like Rihanna would ask for millions, and they would never approach them because they know they can't afford it.
THE MISTREATMENT OF WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRY
Haitian men can be very nasty toward women, and I can only imagine how uncomfortable those guys might have made Jessie Woo feel. I can picture them looking at her, making sexual comments, or having inappropriate thoughts.
This has been happening to Rutshelle and many other women in the industry for years. Rutshelle even said that T-Joe wanted to sleep with her. This isn't a rumor; it was heard in a leaked voice message from the artist herself. It was completely unprofessional, especially from a man who had a wife. Now, a lot of these same types of men are angry with Bedjine because her partner, Kadilak, won’t give them the chance to use and control her. They're just waiting for them to break up.
A HISTORY OF CONTENTIOUS COLLABORATIONS
When I saw Jessie Woo collaborating with them, I thought, “What is this girl getting herself into?” I know my people, and they always seem to start beef with artists after working with them. Have you seen what they did to Haitian Fresh? I know there are always two sides to every story, but it’s best to stay away from certain people and communities.
Fantom has been beefing with Rutshelle ever since their collaboration and even threatened to remove her from a song that's been out for almost a decade.
A FINAL WORD OF ADVICE
The Haitian entertainment scene is full of drama. If an artist isn't going to make more money than they're already making, it’s just not worth it. And let me tell you, the women can be even worse than the men: extremely toxic, insecure, and always competing. Next time, an artist in that position should let their manager handle everything and always have their team around them.
